The Boys ... not as good lately?

Post by abysslord »

I've found the last few issues or so, maybe as far as back as #40, just haven't been very interesting. I feel like he's building to something but I don't know if I care anymore. Does anyone else feel this way? Having Hughie not in the book doesn't help either, and I didn't feel like buying the mini-series about him.

I tend to agree. I enjoyed the earlier issues better. I've thought part of the reason is that the story has gotten a bit more complex, and reading it monthly, instead of in trade, I kind feel like I've lost part of the overarching storyline in terms of what the evil corporation in the background is up to, etc.

Also, the Hughie miniseries wasn't so great - although I did like the issue where we got Annie's backstory.

I agree on this.

As far as the Boys goes as a series, I find that most of the overarching stuff is just OK, but there are sprinkled in some very cool riffs on super-heroes or good character moments. For instance, in the "SuperDuper" storyline I really liked the Auntie Sis character and how she took care of the relatively cretinous other members of the team.

Hughie is the my favorite character, he's very grounded and just a nice guy in general. Seeing how he reacts to the situations he keeps getting put into is what drives me to keep getting the series.

I think that's exactly what my problem has been of late. He was the character you related to and he's been gone for awhile now and the comic has been hurt by it.

So hopefully he'll be back soon, the series only has until #72 before it's done anyway.

Lost me with Darick

Without Darick Robertson on the interiors, I'm not nearly as compelled to check in on the series on a monthly basis. I trade wait for 40%-plus off deals.

Just finished #52, blah. I guess I missed a lot of backstory not reading the Hughie mini because I was kind of lost in the first few pages .... when did Mallory and Hughie meet? Unless I don't remember it happening, I'm guessing it happened in the mini. If so, what happened to putting a footnote?

With that said, this issue was pretty boring. I don't care about the military angle so much. If I didn't know there was an end in sight I'd probably drop this series.

Yes, #52 Hughie material followed on from the "Highland Laddie" mini.

Even though Hughie was back, the stories still didn't have that "feel" that I had attributed to Hughie's presence back a year or so ago...... maybe it wasn't Hughie after all. On the other hand, maybe he'll need to be back more than one issue.

That's pretty (bleep) if you ask me. I guess they're assuming that of course you saw the mini and chose not to get it, so it's your own fault if you get lost a little. Still, that's pretty bad.

Reminds me of Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series. In one book we're introduced to this ghost, Pierce, and she mentions all this background stuff as if we should know. Turns out that happened in a side story published in an omnibus.

Really poor approach if you ask me.

Btw, I'm hoping this lag in The Boys is just him building up to a good finish. Maybe there's some stuff we need to learn/wonder about Butcher that will really change things. We'll see.
